How to start a wellness blog

I know it seems like everyone has a blog these days, doesn’t it?

That’s because having a blog is one of the best ways to establish your personal brand (and it’s a lot quicker than writing a book!)

And you don’t have to wait until you have a full business up and running to start your blog.

In fact, blogging can be a great way to document your own journey to wellness and share what you’re learning – even before you’ve decided to start a career in health & wellness.

The first thing you should do is ask yourself these questions before starting a wellness blog.

And if you decide to go ahead, then let help you cut through the confusion, and tell you exactly how to start a wellness  blog.

How to start a wellness blog – step 1

Before you create a blog, the first thing you need to do is define WHY you have a blog.

  • What is the purpose of your blog?
  • Who is your audience?
  • What problems are you going to help them solve?  What topics will you write about?
  • And why is your blog unique, compared to the thousands of other wellness blogs out there?

It sounds simple, but getting clear up front about WHY you’re blogging, and your unique value and voice, will ensure that you’re carving out your own space in the  blogosphere, not blending in!

How to start a wellness blog – step 2

Use WordPress.  I’ve written about the wonders of WordPress many times on this site, and I recommend starting your wellness blog on the WordPress platform.

It’s free, and it gives you flexibility to evolve it into a full-fledged business website in the future, if you choose.

If you’re really just blogging to start – and it’s not a business, you can start on the free WordPress.com platform.

But if you think you’ll turn it into a business at some point, or if you’re really serious about blogging, I recommend starting with self-hosted WordPress.org.  The software is still free, but you’ll have to pay for web hosting.

Brainstorm topics to write about, create a schedule, and start writing!

I often see new bloggers write a lot in the beginning, and then stop.

To grow your blog, consistency is super important!  You need to release content on a regular schedule, whether that’s weekly, every 2 weeks or monthly.

So if you get in the mood to write, by all means do!  But then publish one article, and schedule the rest to be released over time in the future.

If you’ve got your wellness blog setup, but you need to fill it with content – check out my free 5 day blogging challenge here.
